Sunbirds belong to the family Nectarinidae and are wonderful creations of Nature. Both the Sunbirds featured here (Purple Rumped and Purple Sunbird ) are residents in my farm and are frequent visitors to the Hibiscus plant right in front of the house and so are easy targets for my camera though I must admit that the photo on the top was clicked by my wife. The profusion of bright red flowers attract many of my feathered friends but none visit the flowers more than these Sunbirds. They raid the plant several times a day, assuming impossible poses to access the nectar, sometimes hanging upside down, sometimes doing the “hummingbird” act. In the nesting season, the male with his girlfriend in tow, occasionally foray into the front sit-out looking for nesting material. The male will cling to the wind-chime supervising operations while the female forages around. The yellow-breasted one will let loose a barrage of tweets announcing his arrival while the full purple will be content with a single loud ‘cheep’. Both are spectacular specimen and add so much colour and joy to our life.
